Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Families and the Blessings that We Share

Reflections on Blessings by Chief Gould

Forty years ago the family unity that our ancestors fought so hard to keep seamed to dwindle. We had no idea what the Creator had in store for us. When we started to reunite our families we had no direction, we just had a dream, a vision to bring our Lenape families back together. From day one we were guided by the hand of the Lord. Many of our elders were afraid, and justly so. We have suffered so much at the hand of the government. But, look at us! We are stronger than ever! Our families are more united. We had no means, no money, no assets, but we had a sense of pride, love for one another, and we had our hands and hearts within the Lords grasp. How could we not be protected? How could we not go forward? And, most of all, how could we not feel or be secure? All that we were, all that we are, is thanks to the Creator.
In spite of our blessings,  it sometimes seems like we are being punished for still existing... the state of New Jersey is at it again. We have a law reflecting our spiritual values against profiting from vice; but, in the name of their casino industry, the state has taken all means of our funding support and even placed our businesses in jeopardy.
What we have accomplished by the Lord’s grace all is nothing but phenomenal and can never be reversed unless we stop believing. What we have could not have happened without divine intervention. At present, we are in court with the state to preserve our heritage. It will take prayers from a unified people. If God is with us, who can stand against us? Prayer and love brought our families this far. Please keep the communication open. Pray for peace and serenity amongst our people. Pray for wisdom and strength.

            We will continue to survive!
